The revised Home Economics Scientific and Social Syllabus encourages the use of Active Teaching Methodologies. The syllabus document has outlined a column with ‘Activities to support the course objectives’ under each section to be covered in the course. The idea behind using these activities/methodologies is to enhance our teaching, to offer variety to the way students learn and to involve the students more in their own learning.
By examining the Learning Pyramid closely we can see that students are much more likely to retain knowledge the more active they have been in acquiring that knowledge themselves. Students who have been lectured will retain 5% of the information they have been given, by reading the material themselves they will retain 10%, if there is an audio-visual input they will retain 20%, through demonstration 30%, by discussing the information they will retain 50%. If a student practices by doing uses the information to teach others, or uses the information immediately they will retain between 75 and 90%. This proves the point that practical work and involving the students in their own learning is very beneficial.
Through Active Teaching approaches, teaching changes from being a passive activity to being more active. The environment in the classroom changes with the use of these methods. It allows for more sharing of ideas, more thinking aloud, it allows the student to express opinions and teaches them to listen to the opinions of others. Because most of these exercises demand immediate answers it puts pressure on the student to achieve goals quickly.
